Bruce said the bill is unnecessary, and he will argue against it next week when it is debated in the House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. “It’s retaliatory legislation against me, which won`t apply to me,” Bruce said. “They should just let their tempers cool off and stop this incessant badgering. “They need to find some other rag doll to kick.”

“I also think it is unreasonable to expect me to get up at 5 a.m. and leave my house in Colorado Springs before 6 a.m. in order to sit in rush hour traffic and unknown weather, in the hopes of arriving before 8 a.m. to rush onto the House floor to take an oath two hours earlier than the start of the day’s session, for no good reason, and in a near-empty chamber,” he wrote in another e-mail to her Tuesday.

In addition to getting the chance to stay in office longer, Bruce said, the delay lets him keep his job as an El Paso County commissioner long enough to attend a Thursday commissioners meeting and vote on an ethics proposal. He said he was told he cannot hold both jobs at once.

I will serve my 115,000 county constitutents, including all 75,000 in HD 15, as long as practical. Only when I am more useful in Denver will I begin work there and then resign as commissioner. That date is January 14, when the real work of the legislature begins.

"Two days of ceremonies will cost me two years at the back end," Bruce said this week. "Democrats are frustrated that I figured that out. Everybody that wishes I weren`t there at all would like to try to figure out a way to minimize my stay."

Democrats may seek an excuse to deny my legal right to offer five bills, but I am not tardy. I had offered to file the first three drafts ahead of the Dec. 1 deadline, but the staff director said he could not accept them until I was elected.

Bruce said he will tape the speeches and watch them at home and participate in orientation training and other legislative preparation activities before the session begins. Being there for three days worth of speeches would cost him a potential two years of service, and that is not a worthwhile trade-off despite the criticism, he said. “They’re going to object no matter what I do,” Bruce said. “They’re going to be gunning for me.”
