TAX HIKE COULD ADD $72M A YEAR |
| The tax revenue would be split among El Paso County, Colorado Springs and the county’s seven other towns and would pay for expanding the county jail, hiring police officers, prosecuting criminals and supporting the county health department. (Note some type garbled on GT site page)

Sheriff says proposed cost for expansion is necessary |
| Voters in 2002 rejected a plan to increase property tax rates to pay for a $38 million expansion to the Criminal Justice Center. The county commissioners instead paid for the project by borrowing the money using COPs. The expansion opened in 2005, but the same year the sheriff shut the downtown jail, citing safety concerns, leading to a renewed crowding problem. |

Local officials owe us responsible government |
| While we’re still financially afloat, don`t let the fear propagandists from Citizens for Effective Government convince you that we need another 1 percent sales tax hike for survival — especially since there is a link with the Greater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation. That club is well known for splurging your hard-earned money on corporate giveaways to spur any type of growth for the city and county. |

Officials should focus on making case for tax hike |
| To me, that suggests the government doesn`t have a strong case to make just using the facts alone. That`s why it tries to terrify us. It won`t work. The voters aren`t dumb. |
